By Mildred Brignoni How social are you? Costume Designers in film, television, and on streaming networks can wield a lot of influence. Their user-generated content on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter mean their Costume Design can have an impact beyond the framework of the show. Social media can be a game changer for Costume Designers and a way to promote their work and their brand. Authenticity adds an emotional presence that further resonates with audiences. The open nature of social media can also help democratize opportunities for underrepresented groups. It is important to set the bar high, with the goal of demonstrating a strong brand voice that is distinctive. Keep in mind, it is never too late to refine an existing social media presence. 1. Connection Talk to your audience. Ask questions and respond to comments, particularly positive ones. 2. Consistency Post at a time that your audience will most likely be on your feed. 3 AM in New York is probably not the best time. Consider scheduling a post if optimal times are inconvenient. 3. Voice Distinguish yourself from others. Share thoughts that make you stand out, don't be shy. 4. Ownership When you post original content, take credit for it. 5. Repost Reposting gives credit to the original owner, always add your unique take. 6. Uniqueness Your brand is you, make it about your personal journey. 7. Hashtags and Tagging Use hashtags on many, but not all posts. Tag everyone in your post to maximize reach and give credit. 8. Tone Develop a tone that speaks to your audience. 9. Standardize Try to cultivate a consistent visual style. Audiences respond to a unified vision. 10. Expansion The whole goal of social media is to share content with your audience, about a third of the time, this will spark a reaction or a comment. This reaction is what you build on to broaden your audience. 11. Audience Do not buy followers, they will damage your digital footprint by not showing up as views. 12. Curate A little mystery creates room for the audience to ask questions and interact. 13. Privacy If you are hesitant putting personal information on a public forum, create a separate public account where you can share your work, your process, and inspiration and educate your followers. 14. Branch Out Videos and podcasts broaden your reach.
