P iero Tosi was the absolute hero of the internationally recognized greats of Italian cinema. He was an amazing person, unbeatable in communicating with his collaborators—not only to his assistants, but to all those who sur- rounded him, from directors to production designers, DPs, hairdressers, and makeup artists. His knowledge and his passion for perfection and beauty was always in complete service to the story he had to represent. Spending an evening with Piero or having dinner with him always meant listening to unforgettable stories about the world of Italian Cinema, where he had worked since WWII. He spoke of the wonderful directors he had met such as Fellini, Visconti, Pasolini, Zeffirelli, De Sica. He had amazing anecdotes about actors and personalities like Anna Magnani, Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, and Maria Callas, among others. Franco Zeffirelli, his very close friend who recently passed away, said he was "a wizard, able to restore history, by bringing the past into the present." After his film career, he dedicated more than 25 years to teaching the History of Costume at Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. There he was able to transmit precious cultural and practical knowledge to many Costume Designers who work both in Italy and internationally. He is the only Costume Designer in the history of the Academy Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Goodbye Piero, we will miss you so much. Piero Tosi 1927 – 2019 By Carlo Poggioli
