86 The Costume Designer Fall 2019 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES In Disney's second chapter of humans and fairies, Ma- leficent: Mistress of Evil, leading stars Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are joined by new cast members Mi- chelle Pfeiffer and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It's five years later when the story begins. The homespun village of the first film grew into a large bus- tling town, Maleficent learns her true origin, a rival queen appears, and new winged characters are introduced. Subsequently, the design of this fairy tale was height- ened, the worlds become more sophisticated, and a new fantasy reality was born on every level. CD Ellen Mirojnick, along with her ACD Patrick Wiley created everything to bring this Sara O'Donnell and Ellen Mirojnick Angelina Jolie as Maleficent Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith BFN - WORK After finishing Our Lady of Perpetual Grace for EPIX in Santa Fe, CD Molly Maginnis returned to Brooklyn to get serious about paint- ing. She was working in the Allegheny mountains when her agent told her the director for Season 2 of Amazon's Homecoming wanted to Skype her. Maginnis read the first two scripts and was hooked. Director Kyle Alvarez absolutely charmed her with his original take on the story as it picks up in a fascinating, dangerous turn. Add to this, Janelle MonĂ¡e (an absolute genius, according to Maginnis), Hong Chau, Chris Cooper, and Joan Cusack. "Janelle's character is a chameleon of sorts. I got to move between high fashion and bad-ass for her." The first season concentrated on a military theme, but this season allowed Maginnis to create a hipper look akin to Google or Snapchat offices. Assisted by CD Samantha Schwartz, Maginnis shares, "We've been shooting all over LA and did some gorgeous work up in Lake Arrowhead. The show promises to take the viewer on a strange, wild ride and I was pleased to contribute a distinct look to the project." Universal has teamed up with Amazon and Julia Roberts is producing. world to life from fabrics to armor to molding and sculpted pieces, to jewelry, embroideries, and shoes for every character and extra. Having costumes built throughout Europe and England, this was the first film Mirojnick designed working in London, where she felt ex- tremely fortunate to work with an enormous crew of exceptionally talented artisans, crafts people, and costumers. "It was an adventure I will never forget." Joni Sternberg, Molly McGinnis, and Samantha Schwartz
