84 The Costume Designer Fall 2019 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK Fate: The Winx Saga shooting at Killruddery House in Ireland Costume Designer and Guild Vice President Catherine Adair and her longtime ACD David Matwijkow are off to Dublin, Ireland, to design Fate: The Winx Saga. The new live-action series for Netflix takes its source material from the internationally success- ful animated series and adds its own updated and modern twist to the story of magical teenage girls learning to master their pow- ers. Starring Abigail Cowen ( Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), the co-creator/executive producer/show runner is Brian Young (The Vampire Diaries). Production is based out of the historic Ardmore Studios in County Wicklow (the garden of Ireland) in addition to filming at locations around Dublin, including Powerscourt Falls, Lug- gala, a beautiful estate formerly owned by the Guinness family, and Killruddery Estate, home to 16 generations of Brabazon family. Gotham City has a new set of female heroes in Harley (Margot Robbie), Huntress (Mary Eliza- beth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Detec- tive Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). CD Erin Benach was "super" surprised when asked to design Birds of Prey: And the Fantabu- lous Emancipation of One Har- ley Quinn for Warner Bros. and DC. "I thought there would be a ton of rules and guidelines I had to follow for this iconic comic book character, but the direc- tive was much more fun—take Harley's zany, childish, and slightly crazy personality and design something from scratch." The cherry on the top was that everybody working on the project, including director Cathy Yan, was excited to create female superhero characters that were not overly sexual- ized. Benach is proud she created costumes that she believes are how women really want to look, and thereby, they kick a little ass on the screen.
