Enrico's Private Tour MUST-SEE PLACE: The Pantheon is a temple that I never tire of visiting. It's one of the few monuments where you can feel the history of Rome, from a pagan temple to a Christian church. Built on the site of an earlier temple com- missioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus, the Pantheon contains the tombs of the artist Ra- phael and several Italian kings. The coffered dome has a central oculus as the main source of natural light, which famously penetrates the Pantheon on April 21, the date of the birth of the city, at exactly 12 o'clock, centered on the entrance to the temple, thus illuminating the entrance to the emperor. By diameter, it is the largest dome in the world and its style can be detected in many buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries, in numerous government and public buildings, city halls and universities. FAVORITE SHOP: Music is one of my passions, so my favorite shop is Cherubini, established in Rome in the early '50s. It has become one of the most important music stores in Italy. I love to explore, play traditional musical instruments and find the latest high-tech devices in such a large, well- organized store. My second passion is food, so Eataly, located inside a train station with its four floors and 16,000 square meters, is the best place to find any kind of ingredients to cook special recipes and prepare dinners which I share with family and friends. FAVORITE RESTAURANT: I like the perfect combination of tradition, simple food and creative cooking so my favorite ones are "Ristorante Giulia" in Via Giulia and "Cacciani" in Frascati, a small town not so far from Cinecittà Studios, famous for its wines and the porchetta! PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT: The Vatican, when it's empty at night in the silence of the city, shows its magnificence and architectural grandeur. From the colonnade to the dome, one really feels surrounded by power and history. BEST DAY TRIP: From Imperial Rome to Baroque Rome. You can make the most of all the beauties of the capital by walking, thus avoiding the traffic-heavy roads. An absolute must is a walk from the Colosseum along the forums (Foro Romano and Foro Traiano) to enjoy ancient Rome with its temples, basilicas, public buildings, arches and columns. From Piazza Venezia with the huge monument Vittoriano, also known as "The Typewriter," you can go up Campidoglio Hill and visit one of the most beautiful squares in the city, designed by Michelangelo. Going down from the Cordonata, I suggest continuing to the Jewish Ghetto, an ancient district that still today preserves the memory of a secular past. Narrow alleyways bring you in Piazza Mattei, a pretty little square with the Turtle Fountain, created by Bernini. From here, you can walk to Largo Argentina, famous for the sacred area formed by four temples of the Republican era which are among the oldest Roman ruins in the city. Close by you can easily walk to Bernini's famous "chick" in Piazza della Minerva, the Pantheon, the ancient Roman temple dedicated to all the gods. A quick stop for a break at the historic Caffè of Sant' Eustachio, whose recipe is covered in mystery! Last stop, the most famous baroque square in the world: Piazza Navona, where you can admire Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers and the Basilica of Sant'Agnese by Borromini. FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD: Rione Parione, the heart of Rome's historic center, is my favorite dis- trict. It starts from Piazza Campo de Fiori to Piazza Navona, with the colorful Campo de Fiori mar- ket drawing locals and tourists by day and a party crowd to its bars at night. Bernini's Fountain of the Four Riv- ers dominates the elegant Piazza, a lively space with street performers and upscale sidewalk restaurants. Picturesque side streets hide modest to high-end hotels, simple trattorias and artisan boutiques FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST: Daniele Silvestri and Max Gazzè are my favorite singer-songwriters. Their songs reflect the ironic character of the Romans and at the same time, describe many contradictions of the Italian social and political situation. BEST BAR/CLUB: There are many. For a good cocktail and energetic atmosphere, "Freni e Frizioni" in Trastevere is not to be missed. "Said dal 1923," housed in an ancient chocolate factory, is a hybrid cafe-bar, restaurant and boutique. The smell of cocoa, the cosmopolitan atmosphere and vintage furnishings make this place a must! BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC: I am a guitar player myself and I love jazz and rock music. Alexander Platz Jazz Club is the oldest and finest jazz club in Italy, live music, jam sessions in a very tuneful atmosphere. BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW: Do not miss the view from the terrace of Castel Sant'Angelo, which was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. It was later used by popes as a fortress and castle and is now a museum. Another amazing view is the Roman Forum from Capitol Hill. Piazza Navona The Jewish Ghetto
