4 • LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2019 Welcome to our "Filming at Historic Properties" issue. We are grateful for the support of our members and business partners alike for their contributions to this special issue of the LMGI Compass magazine. Nice to see a location grace our cover as this season's "celebrity." We cannot escape the past. But while it defines us to some degree, we like to think it also prepares us— fortifying us to move more boldly into the future. From adapting historic properties for modern use, to adding to the Guild's original foundation as we expand internationally, we build upon our history. "Sense and Sensibility: Filming at Historic Properties," our cover feature, written by Eric Klein, LMGI explores this literally. In the companion piece, "Flying Down to Whitehall," by Jim Collette, LMGI we explore historic sites across the pond. Our buildings shape our culture and the stories we tell—being able to contribute to their restoration is an important win-win. With all this movement of historic furnishings, Laura McHolm offers a possible solution with storage vaults in "The Sanity of Space." Nancy Mills' piece, "South of the Border," takes us to Horacio Rodriguez, whose masterful work on Roma helped propel it toward its many Academy Awards. From a small barrio in Mexico City to Roma, Italia, Enrico Latella's "In My City" walks us through the Eternal City— what it is like to live and work in Caput Mundi—the capital of the world. Other columns include "In the News" which spotlights our work at the Sundance Film Festival, our wins at the COLAs and our recent NY event at the spectacular World Trade Center. We also catch a striking glimpse of red as Carol Flaisher marshals the troops as A Handmaid's Tale visits the District of Columbia. And in the other Colombia, Janice Polley celebrates the year of the dog. Articles and photography submissions are always encouraged. Your ideas, your stories … they are what keep us connected. Please let us know what you are up to at Compass@LocationManagers.org. In closing, it is with a heavy heart that we report the loss of former long-term LMGI Board member, Treasurer and stalwart friend, key assistant location manager Carole Brennan Segal. Most recently representing us at London's Focus events, Carole was an inspiration. She was there from the very beginning, a vital part of forging the (then) LMGA, helping the Guild reach its current international status. We could not be more grateful for her hard work and dedication to our craft. She was a kind soul, level-headed confidante and a true gem of a human being. In addition to her many LMGI duties, Carole dedicated her time and energy to teaching the "next generation" at Teamsters Local 399 educational classes. Please pay it forward, and honor the memory of an amazing woman. She is missed. Always a pleasure, never too busy, Ken Haber, Lori Balton, Stevie Nelson and Paul Messana FROM THE EDITORS' DESK " Preservation is simply having the good sense to hold on to things that are well designed, that link us with our past in a meaningful way, and that have plenty of good use left in them." —RICHARD MOE, NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION
