PRODUCTION RENDER OF TOOTHLESS AND THE LIGHT FURY. H. GRIMMEL'S CONCEPT CHARACTER DESIGN BY CARTER GOODRICH. PENCIL ON PAPER. I. PRODUCTION RENDER OF THE DRAGON RIDERS IN THEIR ARMOR. H I As an old friend of the franchise, Carter Goodrich (instrumental in designing Drago for Dragon 2) was asked for his take on Grimmel. It only took him two weeks to design and deliver a powerful new villain. His design inspired such confidence that Charles Elison, one of our very talented 3D character artists, launched Grimmel from Carter's sketches. Director Dean DeBlois wanted Hiccup to sport brand-new dragon armor. Taking it one step further, I proposed designing dragon armor not only for Hiccup, but also for the rest of the film's heroes. Those new costumes would reaffirm how strong the connection between Vikings and dragons had become. Woon Jung and Iuri Lioi, two very talented visual development artists in The Hidden World's Art Department, took on the task of developing the new armor. Woon designed armor for Hiccup, Astrid and Tuffnut, while Iuri designed Ruffnut's, Fishleg's and Erot's. Those new outfits were all based on the same concept: Hiccup collected scales shed by the primary dragons, then designed armor according to the personality of each one of these heroes. The scales of the dragons help make the outfits fireproof, with a very detailed and colorful look, replicating the properties of dragons on their riders. G F
