for the exterior prison shot in West Virginia. Later, when I was planning the Rissell interview set that needed to be built on location in Pittsburgh, I was able to reuse most of these bar sections in the new set. As sometimes happens on these things, this new set was built in an old armory in Pittsburgh and the whole sequence shot only to find out after that the Rissell character was going to be recast. Since that armory location was no longer available, I was asked to do a second completely different version on stage. There was very little time to design and build this second version, but the crew pulled out all the stops and threw this whole new set together in just a few days. I was fortunate to have two great Art Directors on the show: Gary Kosko, who I had known and worked with early in my career (when he was a carpenter and I was just starting) and who is a veritable wizard with numbers when it comes to the budget and tracking costs, and Andres Cubillan, who I met for the first time on this show. They were both indispensible, always keeping on top of whatever last-minute changes production threw at us and making sure the whole show was running smoothly. I also have to credit the Scenic Artist, the great Kay Kropp, and her team of locals, for their brilliant paint work on the show, and of course, set decorator Tracey Doyle and her expertise with the period. Finally, my kudos and thanks to my longtime friend and on-set dresser, Nikolai Loveikis. He has worked with me on every show I have designed and is an invaluable part of maintaining the look of the show. He has a rare combination of focus, attention to detail and an aesthetic eye that I would be hard pressed to be without, especially doing series television where I can rarely spend much time on set.
