4 8 P E R S P E C T I V E | N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 8 an accomplished painter, welcomed us into their family. Over the next few days, we studied their rituals, their unique patterns. Slowly and politely, we unpacked their lives, their photographs, their inconsistencies. What we discovered was a home with great warmth, intellect and hyper- creativity. Sometimes eccentric, always accessible, their home embodied progressive ideals while encouraging freedom and self-expression. One always felt the dramatic presence of the glorious landscape outside, and how their home blurred the lines between outside and in. This was a place that felt safe, a place where I'd dreamt of growing up. In other words, this was the last place on earth you'd think might beget a drug addict. Thus became my focus in designing their story: To create secrets hiding in plain sight, just beyond the viewers' reach, in environments so open, architecturally and psychologically, that shame and self-doubt would brew within. The soundstage build embraced this concept, first in material choices and in sustainable geometry: semi-transparent and organic, warm and safe, but with partitions and art projects masking clear A A.
