Summer 2018 The Costume Designer 17 LABOR REPORT UNION LABEL CDG Labor Report Summer 2018 I am opposed to "right-to-work" legislation be- cause it does nothing for working people but in- stead gives employers the right to exploit labor. Quote: Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady, United States 1933-1945 Why do unions matter and are they relevant in today's economic cli- mate? The political right-wing anti-union war on workers continues to weaponize the word freedom; freedom to do something alone. Unions build on solidarity and unity while advocating for economic and social justice. Union members commit to standing unified through collective bargaining which provides a voice my "freedom" alone cannot. Union locals represent their members' special skills and concerns on the job. The union leadership evaluates these skills and common concerns when negotiating a collective bargaining agreement to establish fair equitable wages and provide safe working conditions while union labor generates profit for the employers. Union training programs keep members' job skills current in an ever-changing mar- ketplace. A collectively bargained, well-negotiated wage package in- cludes pension and health benefits for the member. The workforce remains productive when healthcare is guaranteed. I'm sticking with the union! Freedom is just another word for noth- ing left to do. Union activity is being put to the test by Koch money, the DeVos' Foun- dation money, the Freedom Foundation money, and other extreme right-wing money groups. But, we will continue to grow our union membership, organizing one by one. Money interests can be stopped. Union sisters and brothers, growing our membership strengthens workers' collective bargaining rights, a win over Wall Street greed. We mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living.
