buildings alongside it, with stairs and scaffolding that would ascend to the catwalks. Castle Gardens was another set piece comprised of both location work and a backlot set build. The body of a boy would eventually be found on the rooftop of the backlot set, but a fort on the border of Hungary and Slovakia was used for all of the rambling comings and goings the scene required for the investigation and cat-and-mouse chase. Castle Gardens was being converted from an immigration hub into the city aquarium at the time of the story, and nods to these two histories were incorporated into the design. Suspended from the roof of the set was a skeleton of a whale over thirty feet long. Spread throughout the fort, as the characters gave chase, was signage recreated from historic illustrations of the immigration station. The set was also dressed with paintings depicting a variety of underwater landscapes that were reproduced from period archives. A few more set highlights were, an empty market hall in Budapest that was gutted and built out as a three-story interior of the Mulberry Street police station, the interior of the Szabo Ervin Library, where the opulent and historic Delmonico's Restaurant was recreated, and the unbelievable Hungarian State Opera House, which played as the Metropolitan Opera for the series. I could go on for ages about the various set pieces; even having worked as designer, it is difficult to keep track of them all. Beyond the incredible work of the Art Department and construction teams, the tremendous detail given to the series by the graphic design and sign writing team must be mentioned. Led by the graphic gurus Jim Stanes (UK) and Gemma Kingsley (UK), in addition to the never-ending requirements of producing all of the detailed paperwork and documents for creating a turn- of-the-century police station and all of the other A.
