I was a young vocalist with a chronic sore throat problem, and my mother would not hear of a tonsillitis operation, lest it change my tone. she consulted with her elders and they consulted books and friends and ultimately came up with delicious, soothing concoctions that actually helped me feel better. Now I live by these teas and recommend them to all I know. Susan Hornik On The Road, P 30 . as a poet and former publicist of New York's Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where I was lucky enough to see one of alan Ginsberg's last performances of "Howl," I've always been obsessed with all things Beat. My favorite teacher at UCLa extension was Philomene Long, known as the poet laureate of Venice and Queen of Bohemia. In her ilm, The Beats: an existential Comedy, Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti made appearances. I dedicate this story to her.
