22 ADVOCATE | SPRING 2018 Arizona Has 167 New National Board Certifi ed Teachers Arizona has 167 new National Board Certifi ed Teachers (NBCTs) and 53 NBCTs who renewed their certifi cate. By Kathy Wiebke, Arizona K12 Center Executive Director and AEA member Professional Development We are proud of these Arizona teachers. These teachers work in some of the most rural parts of Arizona to our urban communities. These teachers volunteered to put their practice up for review by challenging the standards of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Not only should these teachers be recognized for attaining this high standard but they need to be commended for their perseverance. Many of them have been working towards this goal for the past three years as the National Board transitioned to a new process. Here are some facts about Arizona's National Board Certifi ed Teachers: • Arizona now has 1376 National Board Certifi ed Teachers. We are 18th in the nation for the total number of NBCTs. • There are 167 new NBCTs, We are 9th in the nation for new NBCTs. • We are 14th in the nation for NBCTs who have renewed their certifi cate. • You will see that Arizona's 2018 Teacher of the Year, Joshua Meibos, is part of the 167 new National Board Certifi ed Teachers. For a state that is often at the bottom of most lists, these are impressive efforts. We will be recognizing Arizona's new and renewed National Board Certifi ed Teachers at our 9th Annual Celebration of Accomplished Teaching on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Desert Ridge Marriott in Phoenix.
