6 • LMGI COMPASS | Winter 2018 Dear MeMbers, Grateful for all we have achieved during the past 12 months— it's great to see the LMGI's growing global perspective. We look ahead to the challenges and opportunities 2018 will bring our way. The leadership of the LMGI is committed to promoting excellence on location worldwide. This past year, we celebrated the 4th Annual Location Managers Guild Awards at a fantastic gala at Warner Bros. Studios. Location professionals and film commissioners from around the world were honored for out- standing contributions that compelling locations make to the art of storytelling. The media coverage of this event brought industry-wide attention to the importance of locations and the work we do. Submissions for the 5th Annual LMGI Awards are open until January 14. We encourage everyone to submit the work of location professionals for commercials and both period and contemporary categories for TV shows and features. Talk to your friends and col- leagues. Let them know that anyone can submit entries, and we appreciate having their eyes and ears around the world! The awards criteria, rules and submission forms are available on our website: locationmanagers.org. We also recognize the outstanding work of international film commissions that go above and beyond the norm to assist. We look to you to submit the film commissions you have worked with that went the extra mile to get the job done. As this issue of the LMGI Compass "In the News" column reports, member Leann Em- mert is featured in an international advertising campaign for the Surface Pro tablet. And former LMGI President Lori Balton is featured in a CNN travel piece about unusual loca- tions. Great to see them represent what we do to new audiences. We also applaud our Academy members. Once the door opened, in four short years, we have three location pros in the celebrated Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). We encourage all of you working in feature films to consider applying for membership in AMPAS's Designers Branch. Develop working relationships with Acade- my members and seek their endorsement in gaining membership. AMPAS annual mem- bership reviews take place each spring. The more location professionals are accepted into AMPAS, the clearer it becomes to our industry peers that we are a critical part of a project's design team. AMPAS membership raises the standing of all of us in the in- dustry. The LMGI is happy to assist any qualified member with its AMPAS application. I challenge all of you to recruit at least one new member in 2018. The more we con- tinue to grow around the world, the more effective we can be in raising awareness of our craft and supporting the highest standards of professional conduct for those who do this exciting and demanding work. The benefits of Guild membership include having your own PR team tirelessly promoting our craft. From our own IMDb category to great press, including the LMGI Compass and the LMGI Awards, the LMGI is making great strides in raising the profile of our profession. Be sure to add "LMGI" after your name in the credits, letting everyone know that you are recognized by your peers as a highly qualified professional. In all these ways, our message is clearly getting out there, and we appreciate your continued support. I send you all best wishes for a happy, prosperous new year in 2018, hoping you have an excellent adventure on location wherever the journey takes you.
