Fall 2017 The Costume Designer 19 THE COSTUME DEPARTMENT HISTORY OF DRESS If the Shoe Fits llustration by Robin Richesson rrichesson@cdgia.com Text by Marcy Froehlich mfroehlich@cdgia.com In my sleek CAP TOE OXFORDS with elegant closed laces, I can dance the night away like Fred Astaire in Flying Down to Rio. Off to Chicago, where my MONK STRAP shoes may impress the underworld denizens and wily lawyers, like Billy Flynn, but could I tap as well as Richard Gere? Home at last, like Ryan Gosling in La La Land. Relaxed in my open-laced suede BLUCHER BUCKS, I gaze out at the city from Griffith Observatory, listening to jazz. Decked out in my two-tone DERBY BROGUES, I'm An American in Paris. The open laces are comfortable, and the perforations are sporty yet sleek. I feel as fashionable as Gene Kelly!
