50 The Costume Designer Fall 2017 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK Having a blast filming down south in Atlanta, Georgia, CD Michelle Green is making her television debut designing the new CBS series Valor. This military drama centering on elite United States Army pi- lots, their missions, and their lives, has plenty of badass uniforms and authentic culture style, as well as off-duty civilian trends. With her amazing team, Green has kept as true to military uniform guidelines as possible to properly showcase the true heroes of our nation. She feels this captivating show will keep the audience on edge, with action-packed storylines and a gorgeous cast! Enticed by the story- line and the diversity of the project, CD An- toinette Messam considers designing the Netflix film Hold the Dark, one of the most creative experi- ences of her career. Starring Alexander Skarsgård and Jeffrey Wright, with Jeremy Saulnier directing, it is an intense tale of fate, family, and revenge. The action follows a child taken from his village by a pack of wolves and the expert hunter summoned to track and destroy them. Messam, whose crew included ILL Christian Cordella, felt completely in sync with the production designer and the di- rector of photography's choice of colors, textures, and light. The journey, which included shooting in -30 degree weather in the snow-covered mountains of Calgary, Canada, then traveling to the desert sands and souks of Ouarzazate, Morocco, was an adventure Messam will remember and cherish for a very long time. Hot on the heels of designing Mother! for Darren Aronofsky, CD Danny Glicker is in Atlanta where he is delighted to be creat- ing the whirlwind of Gary Hart's campaign in all its 1987 "real- ness" for director Jason Reitman's The Front Runner. The movie is based on the 2014 book All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid by Matt Bai, who also co-wrote the script with Re- itman and former Hillary Clinton spokesman Jay Carson. It stars Hugh Jackman as brash and charming Sen. Gary Hart, whose presi- dential campaign imploded when tabloid and political journalism collided over the possibility that Hart may have had an affair. The cast also includes J.K. Simmons as Hart's campaign manager and Vera Farmiga as Mrs. Hart. Based on the IDW graphic novel by Joe Hill and directed by Andy Muschietti, CD Luis Sequeira was in Massachusetts to design Hulu's second original pilot Locke and Key. Set in a haunted house where magic keys open doors to different realities, this is Sequeira's second project with the on-fire wonder-child director. The first was the film Mama. With period shows like Salem and The Lizzie Borden Chroni- cles under his belt, CD Joseph Porro is no stranger to creat- ing made-to-order pieces at the breakneck pace of a television series. But even with such experience, he found Seth MacFarlane's science fiction drama-comedy The Orville had a new set of chal- lenges. In every episode, the cast confronts a strange alien race, necessitating as many as 50 made-to-order costumes an episode for one-shot aliens and background characters, plus costumes for the principals. Filmed in Los Angeles on the Fox lot, with a talented and hardworking team, including CD Christine Jordan assist- ing, and ILLs Christian Cordella and Luca Nemolato, Porro tackled creating aliens with trademark aplomb.
