EAT TO GLOW T here's something so profound and liberating about the clock striking twelve, announcing a New Year. Each year gives us the ability to turn a fresh page and write a new chapter. We all get very inspired by this and make tons of resolutions that somehow don't make it till the end of the month. But not this year! This year we will begin and continue because every morning of the next 365 gives us the opportunity to start fresh. Some days can begin with us being jolted awake by the alarm blast. We frantically reach for our technology, imme- diately plugging into emails and texts, aka stress. Instead, let us embark on a different journey, going slowly; taking the time, while still in bed, to luxuriate in the sanctuary of the body and our surroundings… Beginning by breathing ourselves back into the body and returning to the physical afterhours in the dream. Let us focus on the appreciation for this divine instrument we are given to play in this lifetime. Stretch the arms overhead and the legs down long, fully inhabiting the body glove. Wiggle your fi ngers and toes and rotate your hands and feet, then draw your knees into your chest and give yourself the fi rst hug of the day. This hug is your time to infuse your cells with an intention for the day. I use "I Am" statements such as "I am radiant," "I am kind," "I am wise," whatever essence I wish to bring through me and into the day. Now rock up and down on your spine, coming to sit up in easy pose, do a few minutes of Sufi grinds or spinal fl exes just to begin to energize your system. Then place your hands on the edge of the bed, and before you put your feet on the ground, claim your intention once again by repeating the "I AM" statement. Joyfully spring out of bed with your feet vibrating with possibility and intent as they hit the ground. This very simple practice of waking up to gratitude and to the body allows us to begin each day slowly, taking the time to be present to the now. One of the most important things in any New Year is to be present to the moment that exists, shedding any old thoughts or patterns, and allowing yourself the space to create new ones. Sometimes the day can run away with us and we can get lost in the story of the past or fear of the future. There is a beautiful tool to call yourself home, back into the present moment. When you notice yourself spin- ning off into a trip, place your palms to your heart center and fi nd your heartbeat. Sink deeply into this beat, as this heartbeat knows nothing of the heartbeat that came before. It comes out fresh, vital, and strong in the moment. Heartbeats are always mov- ing us forward, being that inner music that reminds us to be in the now. This year, when the clock strikes twelve, let us be fully pres- ent to our heart, reminding ourselves to go slow, be grateful, awaken our senses, and be fully aware of the moment. We will of course s t u m b l e and trip up, and that's okay. This is an adventure so there will be ups and downs, but we can always place our hands on our hearts and reconnect to that inner rhythm … always remembering each precious morning gives us the chance to wake up and begin again.
