According to the studio, its post business in the last two years quadru- pled, exceeded the throughput and storage performance capacity of its existing storage products. This resulted in lengthy and inefficient production workflows, bottlenecked creativity and increased management effort. Ensuring data privacy across editing projects was an added challenge. To address these needs, the company added the Panasas ActiveStor 14 hybrid scale-out NAS high performance storage to its workflow. ActiveStor is a hybrid scale-out NAS solution designed to accelerate industry and research applications. According to the company, ActiveStor is easy to manage regardless of scale. Based on a bladed architecture, tightly integrated Panasas PanFS storage operating system, and the DirectFlow parallel data access protocol, ActiveStor reliably acceler- ates applications. Thus far, the studio reports a 33 percent acceleration in production time while eliminating resolution conver- sion; reports that all editing bays are unified on a single, easily managed net- work under a single global namespace; islands of storage and reducing data privacy issues have been eliminated; the studio is now seeing high-resolution editing of source media via increased storage performance and higher data throughput; and editors now work on multiple platforms and multiple software clients on the same storage solution, at the same speeds across the entire network. ATTO PUTS THUNDERLINK AND CELERITY TO THE TEST AMHERST, NY — ATTO Technology, Inc. (www.atto.com) recently tested its ThunderLink and Celerity 32Gb HBA lines with Lenovo ThinkPad and ThinkStation platforms for power- ing high-performance editing and finishing solutions. According to the company, creative pros who need the most out of their workflow for demanding projects can install ATTO products and expect the full range of ATTO support. The company also reports that it has developed products for creative pros in accor- dance with Apple's release of new Thunderbolt 3 enabled iMacs and MacBook Pros. ATTO now has six Thunderbolt 3 products certified for Mac use with Apple's newest hosts. ATTO says it's the only company to provide Thunderbolt 3 to 32Gb Fibre Channel and 40Gb Ethernet connectivity for high-performance Thunderbolt 3 workflows. In addition, ATTO ThunderLink devices are now certified with the entire suite of Archiware P5 software for back-up and archiving as well as the EditShare's XStream EFS Series for high-end storage. 24 FRAMES TURNS TO AVID NEXIS FOR 4K PLAYBACK VANCOUVER — 24 Frames Digital Films has been serving the Vancouver film industry for over 30 years. The company works on a variety of film and TV series for networks including Hallmark, Lifetime, Discovery, CBC, Corus, and much more. It offers ser- vices ranging from dailies and offline editing to finishing and theatrical col- or correction on a Christie projector in its DI theater. To keep up with its de- manding 4K workflows, 24 Frames needed to replace its fiber-based storage area network with a system capable of 10-20Gbps throughput to a single workstation for reliable, high-throughput 4K play- back. As well as high throughput, 24 Frames needed a high-capacity, Ethernet-based system that it can easily expand in the future as the facility grows. It was also important to have a system that would be easy for its IT team to manage and sup- port, and to work with a vendor that would offer reliable support. 24 Frames decided to invest in Avid NEXIS, the software-defined storage solution specifically designed for the media industry. According to Kaleim Nathani, CTO, 24 Frames, the Avid NEXIS "met all of our criteria, including be- ing capable of 10Gbps and beyond using dual connections and provid- ing 240TB of storage as opposed to the low-capacity, high-cost solutions offered by competing SSD and 10K or SAS HDD solutions. No other product we looked at checked off every single one of our boxes." 24 Frames uses Avid NEXIS as its primary storage for high-throughput workflows, including finishing, visual effects and color correction, while its existing Avid shared storage systems support its offline work.
