Bits & Pieces AES's education focus S AN FRANCISCO — The 133rd AES Convention (www.aes.org), set to take place in San Francisco, October 26-29, will have a focus on "Listening, Learning and Connecting," and its tutorial program will reinforce that mission. Convention co-chairs Vene Garcia and Mike Wells have devoted extensive time and energy to developing a diverse program. In the "Social Media for Engineers and Producers" session, producer/ author Bobby Owsinski will explains the importance for using social media and a proper strategy to develop a fan base or client list. Topics will include mailing lists, social media management strategies, optimizing one's YouTube presence, and the secret behind successful tweets. In the "Small Room Acoustics" session, acoustic consultants Peter Mapp and Ben Kok will discuss basic small room acoustics and issues related to absorption, reflection, diffraction and diffusion. They will also look at low frequency treatment, the difference between recording and control rooms, and considerations for loudspeaker and microphone placement. In the "Large Room Acoustics" session, Diemer de Vries, formerly with Delft University of Technology Netherlands, and past AES presi- dent, will look at traditional and modern methods for describing the acoustical properties of large rooms. Theoretical models, measurement techniques, and the link between objective data and human perception will be covered. Additional sessions will include "Sound System Intelligibility," "Mastering Co-chairs Mike Wells (top) and Vene Garcia. for Vinyl," "Binaural Auditory Models," "Noise on the Brain Part II," "The Practical Acoustics of Headsets" and an overview of "Audio System Grounding and Interfacing." Cut+Run keeps it light for Adidas LOS ANGELES — Cut+Run's (www.cutandrun. com) Isaac Chen edited a new AdiZero spot for Adidas via 180LA. Directed by Matt Bieler of Serial Pictures, the spot features Major League Soccer's Brek Shea, who tells an empty theater why he'll be able to continue his success despite the heavy pressure that comes from constant hype and front-page headlines. The Heavy spot is part of Adidas' "What Light Can Do" campaign. Ring Of Fire handled visual effects for the project, which also include footage of Shea drib- bling past defenders and scoring a goal on a field lined with Adidas signage. The Mill's Adam Scott gave the commercial its color treatment and Jeff Payne of Eleven Sound handled the mix. Music was provided by Human. at a glance KODAK (www.kodak.com) has developed an affordable color film specifically designed for asset protection. Kodak Color Asset Protection Film 2332 is optimized for content owners who origi- nate or finish their productions on digital formats and want to protect their media for the future. The stock offers over a century of dye stability when stored in recommended environments and Kodak's proprietary ESTAR base helps high-quality physical performance. 2332 is designed for expo- sure on digital film recorders and processing in standard ECP-2D chemistry. Production sound mixer RONAN HILL is working on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones, and is relying on Sound Devices' recorders to capture dialogue and ambiance for the series, which is primarily shot in Northern Ireland. The show typically has 10 principal characters speaking. His main recorder is a 788T-SSD, and a 744T is used as a cart-based, two-channel back-up. Sennheiser MKH 60/70 mics are used outside while MKH 50s are used for interior shoots. IRON MOUNTAIN (www.ironmountain.com) has opened a new studio in Hollywood, at the corner of Highland and Santa Monica, offering full film, sound, and digital migration and preservation services. As part of its archival services, Iron Mountain offers playback equipment from many eras to accommodate the wide variety of media formats. The company offers high-resolution digi- tal film scanning at up to 4K on DPX. At the core of the digital infrastructure is the 2 petabyte online digital content repository, where clients can store and retrieve digital assets. Detroit editorial house BEAST has added edi- tor Adam Pillon to its team. He comes to the studio with over 12 years of experience, having worked with Team Detroit, Campbell Ewald, Glo- balHue, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Carmi- chael Lynch, McCann Erickson, Driven and Doner. Composer Dan Foliart scored The Secret Life of the American Teenager at OCEAN WAY RECORD- ING in Hollywood. For the fifth season, Foliart conducted his score with top LA musicians, including Domenic Genova on bass; John Ferraro on drums; Jon Walmsley on guitar; Steve Reid on percussion; and Jim Cox on keyboards. LUCKY POST (www.lucky-post.com) in Dallas has teamed up with Brian Buongiorno's TONE VISUALS to offer high-end visual effects finishing and color services at its facility. Buongiorno designed Tone Visuals' color and effects suite at Lucky Post.
