PATRONS | Sring 2017 8 Just before Christmas, families of 17 infant patients in Torrance Memorial's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit received some unexpected holiday cheer. Each family received a small Christmas tree, decorated with $300 in gift cards, to help make their season a little brighter. e donation came from Samuel's Trees, an organization founded by the Parkins family, who suffered the loss of their infant in 2010. Samuel's Trees is dedicated to the memory of their son, who fought against congenital diaphragmatic hernia for 19 days. e organization works closely with hospitals to place trees with families in challenging situations. e goal is to help take care of families' essential needs such as food, diapers and gas, so they can focus on the life of their baby. According to the organization's website, it's "a tangible reminder that they are not alone, that someone cares, even amid some of the darkest times in their lives."
