www.postmagazine.com 2 POST APRIL 2017 EDITOR'S NOTE www.postmagazine.com 2 POST pril is a busy time for the post production industry, with the annual NAB Show once again setting up shop at the Las Vegas Convention Center. From April 22nd through the 27th, attendees can check out the latest workflow products from more than 1,700 exhibitors! It definitely pays to have a plan in place before heading to the show, as its sheer size and scale can be overwhelming. Post has already received a number of tips as to what some man- ufacturers will be showing. Check out our NAB News section on page 38 for insight, and visit our Website (www.postmagazine.com) for daily updates leading up to and during the show. There are many interesting panels on this year's schedule, including those providing in- sight into popular features and programs. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Ghost in the Shell, Amazon Prime's The Man in the High Castle and HBO's Game of Thrones are among this year's lineup. Rob Legato will present a "Future of Filmmaking" keynote on Sunday, April 23rd at 12:55pm. Legato headed the Academy Award-winning VFX team that recently took home the Oscar for The Jungle Book. Other sessions include topics such as "Video Platforms of the Future," "Next Generation Image Making," and "Ultra HD Broadcasting," so be sure to visit the nabshow.com Website for all the times, dates and pass options. For those looking to expand their skill sets, Post|Production World will present a six-day program focused on the latest production and post technologies, trends and workflows. More than 250 sessions on video editing, motion graphics, cinematography, color correction and sound design will be held throughout the ticketed event. And Post will be covering much of this year's happenings. On Monday, April 24 th , we'll host a number of manufacturers at our booth (SL10527), where we'll conduct sit-down, on-cam- era interviews as part of our Post TV online series. Reps from AJA, Blackmagic, Sony, Facilis, Adobe, JVC, Canon and Autodesk will all be stopping by to take our questions and detail their latest news. If you haven't already, follow us on Twitter (@post_magazine) and Facebook to get all the news as it happens. eading into the NAB Show in Las Vegas, I had a chance to catch up with a number of studio heads about what they think will make the biggest buzz at this year's convention. Broadcasters are heavily focused on IP Video and the transition to ATSC 3.0, but the land- scape slightly differs for the post community. A few folks I spoke with, such as Terence Curren, editor/colorist & founder of Burbank, CA's AlphaDogs Post, said that for post, "We're not producing content differently because of how [broadcasters] are going to distribute it. Where [IP Video and ATSC 3.0] does affect the post community is in the volume of work, which hopefully increases because broadcasters are producing more content." Curren continues that last year, "We saw a push for VR. This year, we'll see more of the nuts and bolts about how do we do VR, how do we do HDR, continuing with 4K — and 8K is coming." With regard to ATSC 3.0, Margaret Yang, lead Flame and finishing operator at PS260 says, "To date, there has not been any changes to our uploading or finishing process. Deliverables continue to require 1920x1080 as their standard final. ATSC 3.0 gives the ability to broadcast at higher ratios but does not quite yet require the highest broadcast quality to be the stan- dard. It's possible their specs will change moving forward, as commercials often shoot in 4K now, but it has yet to do so." According to Michael Cioni, president, Light Iron, he expects that, "HDR will continue to be a hot topic at NAB, as broadcast stakeholders need to adapt to the technology developments that are being led by the consumer electronics industry. Content creators, too, should take advantage of the show to learn how HDR, WCG and UHD can enhance their storytelling reper- toire while in production, so that their vision is not compromised at the distribution stage." As always, Post will report from the show floor on all of these trends and technologies with Post TV, where we'll feature on-camera interviews with leaders in the post community; on our Website (www.postmagazine.com); via NAB-specific e-newsletters; an end-of-week wrap up newsletter and with our annual Post Picks awards from NAB in our May issue.
