The Perfect Marriage JEAN-CHARLES BOISSET IS ONE OF THE most dynamic entrepreneurs in the world of wine. Born in Burgundy, he relocated to California where he rejuvenated DeLoach and Lyeth in Sonoma and Raymond in Napa. Recently he added Sonoma's Buena Vista, the state's oldest winery, to his burgeoning portfolio. He also controls substantial property in France, including the exceptional Domaine de la Vougeraie. Despite his sizable California holdings, Jean-Charles' is first and foremost a Burgundian, and his grape of choice is Pinot Noir. He loves the bright refinement and elegance that Burgundy gives to the variety, as well as the lush, ripeness that California draws from it. Why not create a wine that evokes both qualities—all in the same bottle? The result of this creative thinking is JCB No. 3, a Pinot Noir that is a blend of 60% Russian River Valley fruit from California and 40% Côte de Nuits fruit from Burgundy. 2010 grapes from the Maboroshi, Pennacchio and Starkey vineyards in Sonoma's Sebastopol Hills are combined with fruit from Les Charbonnières in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Les Jeunes Rois and Les Murots, both from Gevrey-Chambertin, to make a wine of remark- able style and character. It is a triumph of winemaking—a blend of classic Burgundian breeding and finesse with California ripeness and depth. I gave it 93 points. The JCB No. 3, which, due to labeling laws, mentions neither its vintage nor its grape variety, sells for $123 per bottle. There were about 250 cases of this first wine made.
