ALTERNATIVE BEVERAGES SOMETIMES A LITTLE SASS GOES A LONG WAY. THESE WINES HAVE STYLE, SUBSTANCE AND KNOW HOW TO Wine-itude Win with by Rachel Burkons All Night Wine Few bands have a more rockin' reputation than AC/DC, the outrageous Aussie band who've been shaking us all night long since the '70s. Now, bringing the "Hells Bells" band into the wine world is the lineup of AC/ DC The Wine, which has already seen "High Voltage" success Down Under with the offerings sourced from Southeast Australia and Marlborough, New Zealand. We boarded the "Rock 'N Roll Train" and headbanged our way to a good time with AC/DC Back in Black Shiraz, a spicy, peppery offering with bright fruit and attitude aplenty. www.vinport.com Hurray for Head Injuries We know that sounds like a strange thing to praise, but trust us, if it weren't for an accidental wine stake to the head, we wouldn't have Staplehead Sangria Blanco, named in honor of the vintner's 911-and-four- staples-to-the-skull incident. A fresh and fruity blend of California Chenin Blanc, CORRECTION In our August issue, we listed an incorrect website address for Prévu Sparkling Liqueur; the correct address is www.drinkprevu.com. seven fruit juices and a CO2 spritz, Staplehead Sangria Blanco is brightly refreshing, with a backyard BBQ-friendly 10.5% alc. It's fresh and fruity on its own, but boasts an easy DIY-appeal when you add a few handfuls of fresh fruit. Martha Stewart, eat your heart out. www.stapleheadwines.com 126 / the tasting panel / september 2012 Emotional Enology Grammy-winning band Train is known for rock ballads that are equal parts gritty emotion and gotta-sing-along pop power, so it's no surprise that their foray into the world of wine is equally nuanced and complex. Partnering with the talented winemaking team at Underdog Wine Merchants, the group founded Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. (named after the band's fifth album) and has released three vinous offerings, including Drops of Jupiter Petite Sirah, a friendly, fruit-forward wine that's as smooth as the song it's named after. Chocolate-berry richness goes down sweet- and-easy, with lingering espresso finish that begs to be paired with a romantic meal and some evocative music. www.savemesfwineco.com Actress Drew Barrymore is ador- able, and that's a fact. While her bub- bly personality may belie her directing and producing prowess, Barrymore continues to prove her entrepreneurial abilities with her newest out-of-the- box project, Barrymore 2011 Pinot Grigio. As charming as Drew is, the wine may have her beat: Fresh, crisp and bursting with lively citrus and bright acidity, this Veneto-sourced wine musters more than star power. www.wilsondaniels.com Quriky Quaff
