38 ADVOCATE | WINTER 2016 AIAA FOUNDATION EDUCATOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Here's your chance to recognize a K-12 teacher who has worked hard to bring "real world" STEM learning into the classroom. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is supporting the best of the best, and they're looking for educators who encourage and inspire students with engaging STEM lessons and contests. FUND FOR TEACHERS GRANTS FOR SELF-DESIGNED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Each year, Fund for Teachers offers summer fellowship grants for preK-12 teachers. These awards enable educators to develop self-directed professional learning experiences, and their odysseys take them all over the world. In the past, educators have roved the Mississippi River, developing an ecology unit along the way, and many other unique experiences. ETHICS AND EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM FOUNDATION GRANT The mission of Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation is to invest in the future of journalism by building the ethics, skills, and opportunities needed to advance principled, probing news and information now and for the future. The foundation makes grants to journalism schools and other nonprofi t organizations focused on the news media. The four program areas for the foundation are: Investigative Reporting, Professional Development, and Special Opportunities. Investigative Reporting and Professional Development programs are supported through programs at nonprofi t and educational institutions. Special Opportunities are grants provided for innovative projects that address an emerging need in journalism. Special preference is given to programs focusing on ethics and news media. Student Opportunities GAMA BUILD-A-PLANE AVIATION DESIGN CHALLENGE The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) recently announced that registration is open for the fi fth annual GAMA/Build A Plane Aviation Design Challenge, a competition to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics skills among U.S. high school students using aviation. The winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid for four students, a teacher, and a chaperone to experience general aviation manufacturing fi rsthand next summer. Registration is limited to the fi rst 100 high schools. Apply online at gama.aero/advocacy/aviation-education/stem. KARMA FOR CARA YOUTH MICROGRANTS Know a student who's looking to get a volunteerism project off the ground? The Karma for Cara Foundation can help. Launched in 2014, the foundation's minigrant program offers small, one-time grants to students to help jump-start or sustain community service projects. A range of projects qualify for funding, including examples like rebuilding a school playground, or helping senior citizens prepare their homes for winter. Free or Inexpensive SCIENCE RESOURCE FROM THE CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES The California Academy of Science's teaching resources offer something for every teacher: Online courses, interactives, toolkits, and much more. If you're looking for fun, engaging science resources, you're bound to fi nd some useful ones at calacademy.org/educators. Choose from lesson plans, as well as games, fi lms and clips, and other interesting multimedia. ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHING SCIENCE AND MATH WITH MUSIC MathScienceMusic.org, a new website from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and the NYU MusEDLab, features free resources to help teachers incorporate music in science and math lessons. The activities and apps are designed for all students, kindergarten through college. Subjects covered include geometry and physics, among many others, and all lessons teach students about the strong relationship between music and STEM learning. n
