WINTER 2016 | ADVOCATE 37 THE E. WILLARD AND RUBY S. MILLER AWARD The E. Willard and Ruby S. Miller Award is presented annually by the American Association of Geographers (AAG) to recognize outstanding contributions by members to the geographic fi eld through special competence in teaching or research, which may include outstanding mentoring, informal education, and basic or applied research. Eligible nominees are AAG members in all fi elds of geography. Self-nominations are allowed. Nominations require a nominee's curriculum vitae and a statement of up to two pages describing how a nominee demonstrates special competence in teaching or research, and summarizing contributions to the discipline of geography. DAR SPECIAL PROJECTS GRANT The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Special Projects Grants provide funding for projects exemplifying the organization's mission areas of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. These areas include the preservation of documents, museum exhibits, children's mentoring programs, teacher's aides, literacy programs, tutoring, and recording oral histories of active military or veterans. The application must follow the format available on the website. It must contain no more than ten single-sided typed pages, including photographs. Only public charity 501(c) (3) organizations are eligible to apply. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of sponsorship from a DAR chapter or state society. KETTERING FAMILY FOUNDATION EDUCATION GRANTS The Kettering Family Foundation awards two annual grants to nonprofi t organizations. Primary areas of support include arts, culture, and humanities; environment; health and medical; human services; public and society benefi t; and education. Interested applicants must fi rst submit a Request Summary; selected organizations are then invited to submit a full proposal. Grant seekers are strongly encouraged to contact the foundation's offi ce prior to submitting a request to discuss potential projects. Request Summaries and proposals are only accepted through the online portal. The foundation does not accept requests by postal mail or fax. ROOTS & SHOOTS MINI-GRANT FROM THE JANE GOODALL INSTITUTE Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program encourages students in the U.S. to launch or grow community-based service learning campaigns. The Roots & Shoots grants are available to help support these projects. To apply, participants must sign up for a free Roots & Shoots membership, and participants must reside in the U.S. Funding is available for many different types of projects, from environmental clean-up, to community education initiatives. Students submit their projects, and then can apply for funding. More information, as well as learning guides and project guidelines is available online at rootsandshoots.org/minigrant. Arizona public high schools and middle schools in need of fi nancial help for their sports programs are urged to apply for the California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant at calcasathleticsgrant.com. Qualifying teams can score up to $3,000. Applications must be received by January 15, 2017 for consideration for the 2016/2017 year. Last year, two Arizona high schools received grants to enhance opportunities for student-athletes. With the funds, Casteel High School (Chandler) could purchase new balls and ball carts for the basketball program and North Canyon High School (Paradise Valley) purchased a new high jump mat for the track team.
