EMMY REPORT www.postmagazine.com 12 POST OCTOBER 2016 LOS ANGELES — The Television Academy held two separate ceremo- nies in September to present the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Awards. In all, HBO was the big winner, racking up a total of 16 wins, including "Outstanding Special Visual Effects" for Game of Thrones' "Battle of the Bastards" episode. FX Networks also saw much success, tallying 12 wins in total. This year's Creative Arts Awards featured an array of notable present- ers, including Rachel Bloom, Mel B, Joanne Froggatt, Michael Kelly, Margo Martindale, Laurie Metcalf, Bob Newhart, Bradley Whitford, Derek and Julianne Hough, Heidi Klum, Jane Lynch, Ryan Seacrest, Gloria Steinem and Neil deGrasse Tyson. In recognition of what the Academy considers a "game-changing impact on the medium," American Idol received the prestigious 2016 Governors Award. The award was accepted by Idol creator Simon Fuller, Fox and FremantleMedia North America. The Governors Award recipient is chosen by the Television Academy's board of governors and is given to an individual, organization or project for outstanding cumulative or singular achievement in the television industry. Awards highlights included Archer winning for "Outstanding Animated Program"; The Man in the High Castle for "Original Main Title Design" and "Single Camera Cinematography"; Mr. Robot for "Music Composition"; Game of Thrones for "Special Visual Effects" and "Sound Mixing"; The Big Bang Theory for "Multi-Camera Picture Editing"; and Black Sails for "Sound Editing." In addition, the Television Academy is presenting 68th Engineering Emmy Awards on October 26th, honoring devel- opment and innovation in broadcast technolo- gy. Kirsten Vangsness, star of the CBS drama Criminal Minds, will host the Awards at Loews Hollywood Hotel. Ncam Technologies is being honored for its unique approach to camera tracking technolo- gy, which allows for the realtime integration of live action and comput- er-generated elements. The positional tracking system uses a pair of high-speed witness cameras to create a 3D image of the environment, along with a number of mechanical sensors. Sony is being honored for developing a 2/3-inch 4K three-sensor system, which is incorporated into its HDC-4300 series camera. The camera supports traditional lens parameters essential to the production of remote sporting events and in-studio dramatic and variety pro- gramming. This camera produces high-quality HD and 4K pictures, and allows multiple frame rates, including ultra-high rates for superior super slow-motion playbacks. And Zaxcom Inc., will be honored for its innovative products that in- clude the first digital wireless transmission system for microphones and a production tool that married wireless transmission with a recording device located within the actor's body pack.
