MESSAGING NEWS FEBRUARY 2010
Perhaps one of the most concerning trends in 2009, which is expected
to grow in 2010, is the use of social engineering tactics. These tactics
played a large part in the successful exploit of users, as attackers
fool the user into downloading malware or giving away sensitive
information. What makes this trend unnerving is that it doesn't matter
what the operating system is, or what the Web browser is. The focus
is on the user, and deceiving the user, regardless of what safeguards
might be protecting the computer.
The use of social engineering tactics is expected to only become
more prevalent with more attacks anticipated this year. The idea
of specialized targeting can be seen in other malware trends too.
Symantec has predicted that the specialized malware trend spotted
in 2009 will continue in 2010, noting an example of an exploit directed
at certain ATMs "indicating a degree of insider knowledge about the
operation and how they could be exploited."
Like with social engineering "friends", malware writers have found
success in preying upon users' interests. Being a crafty group, it is
not long after a major news item hits the wire, before malware writers
capitalize upon the event. We have seen it over and over. Already
barely into the year, the January 12 earthquake in Haiti saw offers to
download video or donate money to bogus organizations, quickly
after the tragic event occurred.
Having found success, malware writers will use these methods more
and more to attack unsuspecting victims. Although many of these
are more consumer directed, with so much personal computing time
taking place on the business network, IT administrators might consider
awareness campaigns to warn their users about compromised Web
sites, scams and teach safe social networking practices.
Regards and safe messaging,
Social Engineering
