6  /  the tasting panel  /  october 2016 UpFront with Cruising up Highway 29 in Rutherford, you can't help but notice as you approach the towering stand of Giant Sequoia trees at Number 8338. Pull in and you'll find yourself at Sequoia Grove Winery, home of some of the most complex, structurally sound, opulent and food-friendly wines made in Napa Valley today. Founded in 1979, today the winery remains a family-owned operation. Steve Allen is the Viticulturalist, as he has been since 1979. Head Winemaker Molly Hill, a U.C. Davis grad, cut her teeth at Sea Smoke and Beringer wineries before coming to Sequoia Grove in 2003. Michael Trujillo, President and Director of Winemaking, started work in the vineyards at Sequoia Grove in 1982 and learned from the great winemaker André Tchelistcheff, then a consultant at the winery.
