EDITOR'S NOTE www.postmagazine.com 2 POST JULY 2016 ummer is in full swing at this point and we've spent the past several weeks talking to pros throughout the industry about their work on some of the hottest films currently in theatres. Finding Dory has been a runaway success, no doubt, and we've got complete details in this issue, along with insight into a number of other popular films, including Independence Day: Resurgence, Warcraft, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and of course, this month's cover story, Star Trek: Beyond. And our coverage continues online, where we've got further details on Independence Day, along with coverage of X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass. The Third Floor provided previs services for several of this summer's VFX-driven films. They are part of our "Summer Blockbusters" coverage (page 6), but you may not be aware of their work on some high-profile television programming — namely Game of Thrones. The studio recently worked on both dragon and battle scenes for the HBO series, which just wrapped up its sixth season in June. We've got details on their work on the Post Website, as well as insight into Iloura's VFX work on Episode 9's "Battle of the Bastards" sequence. GOT fans face a long gap before Season 7 premieres in 2017, but maybe a look inside some of these epic visual effects sequences will help pass the time. Check out postmagazine.com for a closer look. Also online is a retrospective prepared specifically for Post by David Van Slyke, reflecting on the 15 years he spent providing sound design services for more than 330 episodes in the the CSI franchise. Van Slyke provides an interesting look into how he developed the sound palette for the groundbreaking show. Of course, we'll also have steady updates from SIGGRAPH 2016, taking place in Anaheim, CA, from July 24th through the 28th. The show is placing a big focus on 'VR' this year, so it will be interesting to see how the industry embraces the emerging technology that supports the format. he SIGGRAPH 2016 show heads to Anaheim, CA, at the end of this month, bringing attendees up close to the usual, or rather, unusual (as is often the case) computer graphics, animation and emerging technologies with the show's interactive demos, experiential venues and hands-on labs. Special focus areas such as Emerging Technologies have been and, in the case of the growing VR Village, are quickly becoming show favorites. Those in attendance will also benefit from educational sessions, panels, events, the always anticipated Computer Animation Festival, the Art Gallery and, of course, meeting with vendors who are looking to show off their latest advancements on the exhibit floor. Program chair for this year's VR Village, Denise Quesnel, discusses with Post's Marc Loftus (page 4) how the Village grew since its debut last year and how the organization was "inundated" with VR submissions for this year's show. No doubt VR is hot right now and developing at an incredible rate. In fact, Post will be featuring a special VR section in our September issue. Also a favorite at SIGGRAPH are the "Making Of" Production Sessions — this year featuring the creatives behind many high-profile Hollywood films, video games, VR projects and theme park attractions. For instance, Digital Domain will be discussing its work on Deadpool; Walt Disney Animation Studios experts will discuss Zootopia; ILM will go in-depth on its visual effects work for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Marvel Studios, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Rise FX and Method Studios will show session attendees how they completed key sequences for Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. The show also always presents a great opportunity to take in some noteworthy news. For instance, Jaunt Studios, which has certainly made inroads in 360-degree capture, announces that its innovative Jaunt One VR camera will be available for public use through a pilot program with LA-based Radiant Images. More on this in upcoming issues. In a nod to SIGGRAPH, check out our "Summer Movies" features (starting on page 14) — covering Hollywood heavyweights Star Trek: Beyond, Finding Dory and Independence Day: Resurgence, as well as Christine Bunish's report on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Warcraft, X-Men: Apocalypse, her online exclusive on Alice Through the Looking Glass and an interesting look at recent previs work completed by The Third Floor (page 6).
