The U.K. company selects rums from the Caribbean and adds no sugar, coloring or flavoring agents. This leads to old-school rum that is, in a word, awesome. There's MEZAN X.O. Jamaica (SRP $29.99), MEZAN Panama 2006 (SRP $44.99) and MEZAN Jamaica 2000 (SRP $59.99). "The MEZAN range is bottled at 40% ABV and is composed of several single vintages from a single distillery. They are all single cask rums, except for XO, which is a blend of Jamaican rums," says Angélique Jullienne, World Brand Manager for MEZAN. Of the recent releases, MEZAN Jamaica XO is powerful and dry, full bodied with notes of banana and spice. Believe it or not, it makes a great whiskey substitute for an Old Fashioned. "MEZAN XO can perfectly fit in the American cocktails bars: because of its untouched style," Jullienne says. Although they're promoting cocktails, MEZAN is actually trying to tap into the con- noisseur market for drinking neat. "We recom- mend to savor our vintage rums neat, without adding anything, not even an ice cube," says Jullienne, who's helped grow several interna- tional artisan spirits. And of course, when trying to capture the modern rum nerd, a brand must be absolute in its transparency, which is a MEZAN specialty. "With MEZAN we go for trans- parency," she says. "Truth: with MEZAN, the consumer knows exactly what he drinks. Authenticity: MEZAN showcases a taste profile respecting each provenance and distillery.
