It all started with taking a chance on them, helping them get off the streets and offering them a safe place to land. AFH recently broke ground on an innovative project in Midway City, California called Potter's Lane. It is by no coincidence that the literal and figurative backbone behind this housing program is Corten Steel—unbreakable, unbendable and strong enough to withstand the forces of nature—just like our veterans. Estimated for completion this year, the energy-efficient and sustainable housing site will fulfill one of Southern California's greatest needs: permanent housing for chronically homeless veterans. Simultaneously, AFH will join a revolution that is bringing an end to chronic homelessness among our nation's veterans in major metropolitan centers throughout the U.S. It's hard, or perhaps impossible, to imagine life after war until you've experienced it yourself. For the majority of Americans, that means never knowing the pain and suffering of courageous veterans who have served this great country. They can, however, extend compassion and assistance by joining forces with organizations like AFH, and in doing so show them the road home. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Michael Taylor is the housing director and veteran liaison for American Family Housing (AFH), the visionary nonprofit dedicated to ending the cycle of homelessness. As a navy veteran and 20-year property management professional, he has a unique understanding of the needs of those who have experienced homelessness as a result of trauma, addiction, mental illness and physical disabilities. Since joining AFH in 2012, he has been responsible for nearly every aspect of housing operations and property management, including residential leasing agreements for transitional, affordable, fair market, and veteran housing. He also develops and maintains critical relationships with a broad spectrum of private, public and governmental organizations, including those working on behalf of veterans. Prior to AFH, Michael held leadership positions at property management companies Stugotts Management and Davies Development, both located in Detroit, Michigan. He is a graduate of Northwestern Michigan College, with certifications in diversity and multicultural issues, and is an expert in a fair market, tax credit, low income, and veteran affairs.
