These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection. Director Michael Apted Veteran feature and documentary film director and past-president of the DGA Michael Apted discusses his 45-plus year directorial career, highlighting his work on the Seven Up! documentary series, Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), and Nell (1994), among other notable projects. Apted on lessons he learned from shooting documentaries: "I'm sure there's thousands of lessons, but I never rehearse anything on a documentary. If you're doing an interview, never touch it. It has to be the first time it's ever been said and thought. And you've got to know when to quit. I mean you've got to know when something is never going to work for you. Either it's tired out or it isn't any good anyway, you've got to be able to move on. The metaphor I use is you're harvesting material. You don't know what's going to work and if an interview isn't going to work, move on." Michael Apted interviewed by Jeremy Kagan Director Alan Myerson Myerson discusses his 30-plus year career directing feature films such as Steelyard Blues and episodic television programs like The Larry Sanders Show; his involvement with Second City; and the formation of the world-renowned improvisational troupe, The Committee. Myerson on what he believes to be a Director's most important tool: "In my estimation, the most important tool we have as Directors is empathy. Is the ability, or the attempt at least, to actually experience what another person's experience — not the sympathy, but the empathy. That's the empathy for the actor, for the character, for the crew, for the other characters in the story, for the events, and for yourself. To be able to experience what you're actually experiencing is, I think, the most significant thing that we have to draw on and that we have to offer as Directors."
