The free programs can be down- loaded at http://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/varicam/vcs/index.html. The VariCam menu simulators closely approximate the full range of operation of the cameras' Remote Operation Panel, and represent an ideal approach for those who want a head-start on familiarizing themselves with the equipment or want to prepare in advance of hands-on camera time. The program will display in 1920x1080 Full HD, and is supported by browsers Internet Explorer 10.0 or later, and Safari 8.0 or later (Mac OS only). RED ADDING DNXHR & DNXHD FORMAT SUPPORT IRVINE, CA — Red Digital Cinema (www.red.com) and Avid (www.avid.com) have announced that Avid's DNxHR and DNxHD recording formats will be coming to Red's DSMC2 line of professional cameras. The line includes Red's Weapon, Scarlet-W and Raven models. Avid DNxHR and DNxHD are known for their ability to reduce storage and bandwidth requirements. DNxHD has been accepted by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers as the foundation format for the VC-3 standard. Additionally, these formats offer seamless direct-to-edit experiences for professionals looking to keep the highest im- age quality possible, while leveraging the investments they've made in Avid in- house production systems. The DNxHR and DNxHD formats will be added to simultaneous recording capabilities that Red's DSMC2 cameras currently offer via the Redcode Raw and Apple ProRes formats. Avid DNxHR and DNxHD will be made available via a free firmware upgrade in mid-2016. JBL APPS HELP WITH SPEAKER ALIGNMENT STAMFORD, CT — JBL by Harman (www. jbl.com), the manufacturer of loudspeak- ers and professional studio monitors, has introduced two iOS apps that can help pros in setting up their studio and home speakers. SpeakerAngle and SpeakerPro are designed to help users optimize speaker positioning. Both address com- mon setup issues that limit the perfor- mance of speaker systems. Relative to the listening position, differences in speaker distances and "toe-in" angles can cause subtle sonic detail to be concealed. SpeakerAngle allows precise adjustment of toe-in angles, while SpeakerPro uses sound to precisely measure the distance of each speaker to the listening position, as well as the distance between speakers. Distance is displayed accurately within fractions of an inch, allowing optimization of speaker placement. Additionally, SpeakerPro uses distance data to provide intelligent toe-in angle recommendations for optimized imaging at the listening position. Both apps can be used with Apple iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch devices. JBL SpeakerAngle and JBL SpeakerPro are now available for download from the Apple App Store. SpeakerAngle is free of charge while SpeakerPro is available for $1.99. WACOM INTRODUCES BAMBOO SMART STYLUS VANCOUVER, WA — Wacom (www.wacom.com) has introduced its Bamboo Smart stylus for select media tablets. Bamboo Smart is the result of two premium Bamboo Smart styluses. Bamboo Smart for select Windows, which made its debut at CES 2016, is a 2-in-1 device enabled with Active Electro-Static (AES) technology. Bamboo Smart for select Samsung devices, introduced in September 2015, uses Wacom's Electro-Magnetic Resonance (EMR) technology. Both styluses offer pressure-sensitive precision and sublime comfort, producing handwritten notes and rough ink concepts that feel and look like they were produced by traditional media. Two programmable side switches on the barrel of Bamboo Smart's AES stylus allow for fast and convenient access to regularly-used commands, such as right click or double click. The stylus requires an AAAA battery; the Bamboo Smart for Samsung features one side switch and requires no batteries or any type of charging. Bamboo Smart ($39.95) for Samsung is available now; Bamboo Smart for Windows will be available this month.
