HCR Banquet May 15 DSEA Human and Civil Rights Awards Banquet May 15, 2012 You are invited to the annual Sheraton Hotel, Dover Honoring John Moore plus the student winners of the "We are One, We are Many"Art and Writing Contests 5:00 Art Exhibit opens~ 6:00 Dinner We honor the Rev. John Moore currently vice president of Resource Development and J Strategic Partnerships for the United Way of Delaware. He is also Senior Youth Pastor at the Cavalry Baptist Church in Dover, a position he has held for twelve years. His work for the United Way and for his church are not easily separated: in these roles, Pastor John is helping youth and their families, many of whom are in difficult, sometimes des- perate, situations. Many Delawareans also know him as the man who delivers Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speeches at events as big as the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial ear- lier this year in Washington, D.C., and as humbling as the Martin Luther King, Jr. obser- vance for homeless families at the Dover Interfaith Mission last month. ohn G. Moore, Sr., age 61, is Rev. Moore tells the story about his own path from poverty in inner city Philadelphia to fulfillment as a decorated master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, husband, father, minister, community leader and mentor to young people. He has devoted his life's work to telling that story where there is even one person who believes there is no path forward. Like Martin Luther King, Jr., he tries to "…inspire hope in people who feel hopeless." Whether his entrée to young peo- ple is through the United Way of Delaware or as a pastor, it matters not. He has carried his message to the Ferris School, Stevenson House and the New Castle County Detention Center. A charismatic speaker, he also visits young adults in the CREST program in the state's correctional facilities, the program for young adults needing help to end their addictions to drugs and alcohol. Brandywine's Jessie Chen: Hero in the Chinese community J essie Chen is a reading specialist at Lombardy Elementary School in the Brandywine School District, and winner of the 2012 HCR Award for a member of DSEA. Nominated by Hongyu Wang, Ph.D., president and board chair of the Delaware Chinese American Association, Chen serves as the point person for school-related questions and concerns from Chinese and Chinese-American parents. She volunteers her time to give seminars to newly-immi- grated Chinese families to explain school policies, rules, the importance of voting in referen- da elections, etc. For many years, she has served as an interpreter and translator for school-related parent confer- ences, tests and documents in the Chinese community. "In the local Chinese community," Dr. Wang writes, "she is a dedicated educa- tor and hero in many people's eyes."
