10 LIVEMAGS.NET JANUARY>>10 IN SOCIETY THEMONTH 1. CASA Benefit Luncheon featuring Dr. Phil 12/4 @ Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel Since 1977, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Orange County, has created a community of volunteers who serve as mentors for foster children removed from negligent parents. At an event held at the scenic Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, CASA supporters were greeted with a smile and glass of champagne. The supporters funneled outside to a silent auction, where philanthropy, mixed with party ambience, emphasized the needs of the children. Previous Holiday Luncheon's have raised over $100,000 respectively; however, record ticket sales this year suggest an increasing support of CASA and its programs. Keynote speaker Dr. Phil ended the day with humble words of encouragement and reminded everyone to give back in any capacity this holiday season. 4. John Heffron 12/11 @ Irvine Improv Winner of Season two's Last Comic Standing, Jeff Heffron, took the stage Friday at the Irvine Improv. Clearly comfortable with an audience, the popular comedian recently released his third comedy CD, The Better Half and rereleased his first CD Kid with a Cap. Many recognize him from guest appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Chelsea Lately or even on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Heffron's material on the complexities of relationships and the poor communication inherent in them was well received; many of his astute observations were as informational as they were funny. Ultimately, the night was well balanced between various types of talented comedians; despite the brisk December air, everyone left the building and walked into the rain smiling. 2. New Shanghai Circus 12/28 @ Cerritos Performing Arts Center The amazement of the New Shanghai Circus returned to Cerritos as the astonishing Shanghai Circus acrobats took to the stage at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center on December 28th. The performance captivated audiences of all ages and included synchronized acrobats, amazingly flexible dancers and performers wearing beautifully hand-crafted costumes. The show consisted of several segments with a traditional Chinese holiday theme. The performances were spot on and captivated mostly sold out audiences in what was a refreshing departure from the more common circus acts that frequent Orange County . Leaping through the air and balancing on high wires, there wasn't a bad seat in the house as New Shanghai Circus delivered a performance well worth the price of admission. 3.
