dga quarterly 5 Dear Members: I write this President's Letter a few days after being reelected as DGA President, my heart filled with gratitude to the Guild's membership for this continued opportunity to serve. The DGA presidency is the most challenging, most complex, and ultimately the most rewarding thing I've ever been asked to do— and I look forward to tackling whatever lies ahead in the next two years on behalf of our 16,000-strong membership. Most of all, I'm inspired by the reelected and newly installed members with whom I'm honored to have the privilege to work. They're an amazing cross section of the Guild's membership, representing the full spectrum of genres in which our members work—from feature film to documentaries, from episodic televi- sion to news, sports, variety, commercials, and new media. The DGA was founded almost 80 years ago by working directors, masters of the craft who banded togeth- er to protect and advance their creative and economic rights—and those of their fellow directors. Today in 2015, the Guild continues that legacy of working leadership—directors and directorial team members who lead sets by day and still find time to serve their Guild. I'm proud that some of our busiest, most prominent members in all genres have been elected to serve. (Just check out the masthead on page 4 for a full list and you'll see what I mean.) In the same way that our sets bring the combined leadership of directors, assistant directors, UPMs, as- sociate directors, stage managers, and production associates—more than 30 percent of our board leadership is made up of directorial team members. Their critical voices bring key concerns to the board about issues affecting our members and the crews with whom we work on a daily basis. In addition to the diversity of genre and category—our newly elected board is also the most representa- tive of women and minority members in Guild history. Women and minority members now comprise 43 percent of the 2015-2017 National Board. This is an increase of 7 percent from 2013-2015. Women now represent 37 percent of the National Board, up from 32 percent. Here in the pages of the DGA Quarterly, we will likewise continue to highlight the full spectrum of work by directors and their teams in terms of genre, category and the increasing geographic reach of our mem- bership. In this issue, intrepid U.K. feature director Danny Boyle, our DGA Interview, exemplifies that last point, while late-night show director Sandra Restrepo Considine and her directorial team demonstrate how they bring the funny back to Los Angeles with Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Profiles of directors Alfonso Gomez- Rejon, Angelina Jolie Pitt, and Rosemary Rodriguez, and a thorough examination of navigating the evolving pilot season from more than 10 leading pilot directors are just a sample of the range of stories in this issue. The bottom line is this: Nothing worth doing is easy, and representing the interests of 16,000 individual members is challenging—but I'm up for it. I look forward to working with our newly elected National Board to continue to advance the economic and creative rights of our members in an industry and world changing at the speed of light. And sharing those advancements with you in the pages of this magazine. Best, Paris Barclay PRESI DENT'S L E T TE R PHOTO: HOWARD WISE
