6 dga quarterly Andrew Pulver ("The Many Sides of Dan- ny Boyle") says Danny Boyle may now be routinely described as a national treasure in the U.K., but his enthusiasm for film- making—and talking about it—is as infec- tious as ever. Pulver is a film critic and editor for The Guardian in London, and is the author of a BFI Film Classics study of Night and the City. Hugh Hart ("Film Is Dead—Long Live Film") found that all of the directors he talked to had clearly given a lot of thought to the way they shoot their movies. "Chris- topher Nolan presented a passionate argu- ment that shooting on film deserves serious consideration for reasons having nothing to do with sentimentality or nostalgia." Hart has written about movies, television, and design for Wired, the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times. Margy Rochlin ("'I'm Much Happier Directing'" and "Sentimental Education") says Angelina Jolie Pitt admitted to hav- ing a slight case of nervousness when she was interviewed. "She said, 'I've never answered questions about the process of directing before.' But once she got going, you could tell how much she loves it." Rochlin is a regular contributor to The New York Times. Robert Abele ("Lost in America") wasn't surprised to see how attuned Lisa Choloden- ko was to the character developments in Five Easy Pieces. "Her own films are exquisite per- sonality studies," says Abele. "So hearing her insights into this classic was a treat." Abele is a Los Angeles-based critic and journalist. Lisa Rosen ("Hollywood Beat") agreed with director Sandra Restrepo Considine that the whole team on Jimmy Kimmel Live! makes her laugh. "First AD Jeri-Ann Wong said she watches the show five times before the day is out. 'But once I drive home, if my friends call me and ask who was on, I can't remember.'" Rosen is a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times and Emmy and Written By magazines. Rob Feld ("Yeah, Baby, It's Austin Powers") says getting the play-by-play from Jay Roach about constructing the levels of meta refer- ences for the visual jokes in the opening se- quence of Goldmember, "you get the sense of a kid in a playground." Feld teaches film at NYU and is the host of "Day for Night" on The Huffington Post. David Kronke ("Navigating Pilots") says "It was instructive to discover how directors face new challenges in creating the lynch- pin of any successful program—the pilot. They do this with both immense cre- ativity and pragmatic insight." Kronke has written about the entertainment industry for 30 years for such publications as the Los Angeles Times and TV Guide. Terrence Rafferty ("Why Orson Welles Still Matters") says Orson Welles' movies, no matter how many times you may have seen them, never seem to age. Even in his later films, the direction is exuberant— he was youthful to the end. Rafferty is a regular contributor to The New York Times Book Review and the author of The Thing Happens: Ten Years of Writing About the Movies. ® CO NTR I B UTO R S James Greenberg Editor in Chief Nancy Duckworth Art Director Jamie Van Bergen Copy Editor Brandon Kyle Goco Editorial Assistant Tricia Noble Design Associate Jovita Dominguez Photo Researcher Darrell L.
