Jan van Riebeeck, as he is more com- monly known, was the son of a surgeon, who, while working for the Dutch East India Company, formed the first Dutch settle- ment at the Cape of Good Hope in 1651 as a ship refreshment post. In 1655, he planted vines, and by 1659 the first wines were being produced. A view of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains from the Anthonij Rupert vineyards in Franschhoek.
