SALES WITH A PURPOSE TRAINING PROVIDED Pocahontas The Character The daughter of a Native American chief, Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) leads a charmed existence in pristine 17th-century Virginia, where the river runs purple, the trees can talk and the raccoons and otters are her friends. When brutish, gold-digging Englishmen arrive on the scene, her land and people are threatened. When Pocahontas falls for one of those Englishmen, she finds herself at the center of an epic conflict. The Verdict Intimately connected to her environment and fiercely protective of its resources, Pocahontas is a true conservationist. With our rapidly growing population scheduled to hit 9 billion by 2050 and more people driving, flying and consuming than ever before, we need people like her working to safeguard our future. Environmental science is a rapidly expanding field that offers a range of opportunities for the eco-minded jobseeker. As a lobbyist, Pocahontas would be tasked with persuading politicians to prioritize conservation. It's not as high on the government agenda as say, the economy or healthcare, but Pocahontas' passion, knowledge and skimpy attire would surely convert some higher-ups to her point of view. Another option would be to work from the inside. The Environment Protection Agency is the federal agency in charge of safeguarding America's resources and protecting public health, but with current EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson giving two thumbs up to fracking, the time is ripe for Pocahontas to take the reins. Perhaps her best opportunity would be with the United Nations, where Pocahontas could use her outstanding negotiation skills to foster cooperation between countries on pressing issues like reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It's a process many fear is not moving fast enough to meet the challenges of global warming. But if anyone's qualified to play hero on the brink of ecological disaster, it's the girl who went down in history for stopping a war as the guns were drawn.
