AlphaDogs assistant editor Rachel Bartlett and colorist Sean Stack worked collaboratively as a team using a round-trip workflow from Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve to finish the film. Bartlett explains, "We decided on a Premiere Pro and Resolve round-trip workflow because they both work natively with Red 4K media, which allows a clear path to a smooth delivery." Resolve has a Red camera file management command known as R3D Trim and it was relied on to move the camera media used in the final locked se- quence to the shared server at AlphaDogs. The fast fiber connection to the trimmed source files allowed Stack to navigate quickly, review color grades in Resolve in realtime, and render as fast as the GPU would allow, saving time and money. "The round-trip workflow worked extremely well for this project," says Stack. "Resolve had no difficulty rendering out the custom 4K frame size known as 4K Scope (4,096x1,708) for the final trip back into Premiere Pro." Specific color choices made by Stack during color correction not only added to the suspense of the story, but also kept the film's continuity in check. One scene in particular involved a kitchen sink close-up shot with very warm tones. Stack chose to match a cooler version of the sink as it appeared in a wide shot earlier in the story, allowing for a consistent look through- out the film. "The good news is Resolve is such a powerful tool for color grading, that we had a chance to try both warm and cool temperatures with scenes and truly make a creative decision on what looked and felt the best," Stack notes. "We loved that Sean was able to make subtle adjust- ments to the color on a micro level that allowed for our characters and story to shine," adds Wong. Revision will screen at various festivals. ILLUMINATE COMPLETES HD RESTORATION ON THE X-FILES FOR NETFLIX LOS ANGELES — Illuminate (www.illuminatehollywood.com) recently completed a digital restoration of all nine sea- sons of the iconic, fan-favorite TV series, The X-Files, for the show's release on Netflix in April. Retransferred from the camera-original negative, the show's entire 201 episodes were reassembled in high definition, using illuminate's propri- etary iConform technology. iConform was used to automatically edit together scanned camera-original negatives using existing reference material, but without the need for an EDL. With the resulting scans, Illuminate then applied color correction and other enhancements to generate a new file ready for distribution in today's viewing standards. The process also involved recreating the visual effects in all 201 episodes. "We created the iConform technology to give content own- ers a new and economical way to transform top SD content into beautiful HD and 4K ready-to-go masters," says the company's CEO, Jim Hardy. "Illuminate has already used this restoration tool to re-master TV series for major studios and distribution companies such as CBS, Shout! Factory and 21st Century Fox. These restorations include HD versions of many popular TV se- ries, including 24, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Pee-wee's Playhouse."
