FOR MEMBERS Filmmaker: SAG a Boon for Indie Productions A va DuVernay, the writer and director of Middle of Nowhere and I Will Follow, spoke out on SAG TV about the benefits of hiring SAG for indie filmmakers. DuVernay said there is a misconception among some independent filmmakers that there are only two kinds of actors: "Sometimes independent film people think 'nonprofessional actor' and 'celebrity' — they forget that there are thousands…of working actors in SAG who are the most experienced, the most professional [performers]. They bring in a talent and an expertise and a resumé that helps you when you're on set." DuVernay pointed out that indie productions with tight budgets and tight schedules benefit greatly from having professionals on the set, who are able to take instruction and quickly adjust to changes.
