We Are One, We Are Many New must-see movie, Mitchell20 This is the story of twenty teachers who decided to take con- trol of the one thing they had control of, the quality of their teaching. school in Arizona coming together to lead the transformation of their schools by becoming better teach- ers. Despite funding cuts, high crime, high unemployment, in a low-income neighborhood, these teachers took over, and joined together to go through the National Board Certification process. N is the heroic story of 20 teachers confronting the one thing they have control of, the qual- ity of their teaching, during what turned out to be a very tough time to be a teacher – especially in Arizona. Over the last three years, the pro- ducers followed these teachers as they attempted National Board Certification, a grueling program that is the most accurate measure of teacher effectiveness in relation to student achievement. What we thought was going to be a nice clean story of triumph ended up getting messy, real messy. Failures, involuntary transfers, petitions, insubordination, threats of lawsuits all got mixed in with the hard work of teachers trying to become better. The documentary is powerful and heart-wrenching, and points to the fact that quality professional devel- opment leads to quality teachers. Director Sheenae Shannon reports: " " " What folks are saying… F ollowing the first showings in Arizona, here's what AEA Communications It has been well-received by our members and education support- ers in the community. The film is about one of our members, Daniela Robles, who after achieving National Board Certification, organizes a group of her colleagues together at Mitchell Elementary to attempt NBC. It's really about the obstacles teachers face, and the lack of respect and support they receive in providing quality public educa- tion to students. There's a lot of need for relevant professional development and support for teachers to improve teacher quali- ty, as well as showing teachers the respect they deserve by including teacher input in education policy decisions. " Most importantly I think the film is a story about teachers as told by teachers, which our mem- bers said they appreciated because it made them feel their voice was out there and being heard. " " I think the film emphasizes the information about district-mandat- ed professional development and its one-size-fits-all approach that many of our members can relate to. 14 October 2011 DSEA ACTION! www.dsea.org Mitchell20 MITCHELL20 www.
