From the Editor I TM love the air of anticipation that summer brings and this year the town is abuzz with the promise of a very exciting season indeed. Visitors are arriving from all over the world. We see them on the streets and welcome family and friends into our homes. Yes, Holly- wood is a favorite U.S. destination and this summer in addition to music under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl, Ford Theatre and Greek Theatre, in July Cirque de Soleil premiere’s “Iris” at the Kodak Theatre compliments scores of theatri- cal productions and music performances, Hollywood is a Summer Festival of the Arts indeed! Each year I’m thrilled to get so many calls from the “hometowners” who receive Discover Hollywood in their mailboxes. They love the articles about our history and about places that we know are here, but in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives just don’t seem to have time to visit. The informa- tion on live theatres, galleries, music and comedy venues provide a handy reference as well as a guide for visitors. The daily calendar in these pages is also updated nearly every day as our performing arts scene is as changing and vibrant as ever. In this issue, James Bartlett takes us on a tour of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Los Angeles and the automobile are practically synonymous. Seems you can’t have one without the other. Located directly across from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, you get the point of how we feel about our cars…definitely an art form. Although when you look at the Hollywood Hills, it’s hard to believe that it was also the automobile that made the hills accessible when the land was first developed in the late 1920’s. The roads twist and turn and there’s no direct road anywhere. I’m delighted that Mary Mallory, whose Hollywoodland book has just been published, wrote the article especially for our publication. Pick up a copy of her book for even more fascinating stories. As I get feedback from you, our readers, about Discover Hollywood‘s edito- rial direction, I know without a doubt that people are interested in our past as well as our present. Who worked, lived and played here then and who’s here now. Our No. 1 asset is the authenticity of this place called Hollywood. It con- tinually fascinates and there are countless stories to be told. Enjoy your stay or, for those of us who call Hollywood home, The Go Gos said it best: “ This town is our town, this town is so glamorous, bet you'd live here if you could-- and be one of us.”* Summer 2011 Publisher Oscar Arslanian Editor Nyla Arslanian Contributing Writers James Bartlett Mary Mallory Cover Photography Anthony Nelson Design & Production The Magazine Factory Listings & Administration Charlotte Deshayes, Editorial Assistant Chelsea Lynn Pfeiffer, HAC intern Soni Bayles, research Website Consultants COP Web Solutions Discover Hollywood is published quarterly by Arslanian & Associates, Inc.
