products Daz 3D simplifies character creation Archion SAN targets small & mid-sized studios — Archion’s (www.archion.com) new EditStor ES is a self-contained stor- age area network designed for small and mid- sized facilities. Once in place, EditStor ES al- lows users to share media across Mac, Win- dows and Linux platforms. There are no seat costs or licenses, allowing an unlimited num- ber of workstations to be connected through a standard GigE switch. With a starting price of $17,995, EditStor ES — Daz 3D’s (www.daz3d. com) Daz Studio 4 helps simplify the creation process for producing 3D human models. A new series of 3D models allows for a virtually limit- less set of figure variations that can all be built from a common base. The app uses a new lightweight file for- mat that makes it easy to transfer as- sets. The open for- mat also allows for easy editing. The TriAx Weight- map System gives artists flexibility using the weight- map per-axis joint system. Artists can take the base Gene- sis mesh and alter it by pushing or pulling. Proportions and mass of the fig- ure can be altered, and the app auto- matically adjusts the Genesis base skele- tal rig to fit within the new shape. Daz Studio 4 is a free download on the Daz 3D Website. features a number of rich media management tools, such as volume expansion, which en- ables users to create shared volumes of any size and expand volumes on the fly. The ES also has the automation tools of an enterprise storage server, including storage pools, vol- ume replication and snapshot, data replication and volume manager, as well as support for tape back systems and virtual tape volumes. EditStor ES comes standard with hardware RAID protection and four ports of 1GigE, which can be directly connected to four clients or to a standard Ethernet switch. The four ports provide up to 400MB/s bandwidth, and the addition of an optional second four- port GigE card or a single 10GigE card signif- icantly increases bandwidth up to 800MB/s, and 1,000MB/s. respectively. Focus intros ‘proxy’ recorders — Vitec Vegas Pro NLE offers variety of updates — Sony Creative Software (www.sonycreativesoftware.com) has released Vegas Pro 10.0d of its PC-based nonlinear editing software, offering 3D tools, support for AMD’s ATI graphics chipsets using OpenCL, and improved track group workflow. GPU-accelerated AVC encoding support has been extended to users with AMD ATI graphics chipsets, which support OpenCL, allowing them to use the Sony AVC encoder for faster project rendering. Additional up- dates include MVC and MPO 3D file format compatibility from Sony cameras, including TD10, NX3D1, TD300 and the Alpha and NEX series. Improvements to track grouping include mute/solo technology to help users isolate and work with specific tracks while mixing. The latest update is available for free to existing registered Vegas Pro 10 users and for $249.95 for owners of Vegas Pro 9 or earlier versions. Vegas Pro 10.0d is priced at $699.95 for new users. AMD delivers two high-end graphics cards — AMD (www.amd.com) has introduced new professional graphics cards: the AMD Fire- Pro V5900 and FirePro V7900. Both offer AMD PowerTune and GeometryBoost technologies in addi- tion to AMD Eyefinity multi-display support. The V7900 features four outputs from one card, enabling it to drive four independent dis- plays from a single slot. Additionally, the graphics card includes the ability to support framelock and genlock via the AMD FirePro S400 synchronization module, as well as 3D stereo with the included expansion bracket. The V5900 delivers mid-range high performance without exceeding 75W power draw. Coupled with AMD Eyefinity technology, the FirePro V5900 supports three display outputs. The V5900 and V7900 also feature Display- Port 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 support, as well as 2GB GDDR5 frame buffer. AMD PowerTune technology is a power management technology that provides direct control over GPU power usage. GeometryBoost technology is a hardware capability that processes two primi- tives per clock cycle, resulting in fast geometry performance and smooth handling of complex models. Both cards received certification for a variety of Autodesk 2012 applications and Side Effects Houdini 11. Pricing is $999 for the V7900 and $699 for the V5900. www.postmagazine.com June 2011 • Post 43 (www.vitecmm.com, owner of the Focus Enhancements product line, was at NAB with the FS-H Professional H.264 Proxy Recorder se- ries of battery pow- ered, portable recorders. The FS-H50, FS- H60 and FS-H70 proxy recorders sim- plify the acquisition workflow by record- ing matching or continuous lower bit rate H.264 proxy content to comple- ment the camera’s own high-res con- tent. The proxy con- tent can be trans- ferred to portable devices (smart phones, tablet PCs) for quick viewing, uploaded to a net- work for sharing and collaboration, or transferred to an NLE for editing.
