1 18  /  the tasting panel  /  july 2014 T here's a reason why the locals call Nebbiolo Prima the "Nebbiolo Marathon." It's not just a lot of wine; it's more like a gustatory expedition. Every May, the non-profit organization Albeisa (com- mitted to promoting Langhe and Roero wines) invites journalists from around the world to gather and evaluate the new release Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero wines. For the 2014 rendition of Nebbiolo Prima, 90 journalists from 25 countries assembled every morning from May 12-16 at the Palazzo Mostre e Congressi in Alba to blind-judge 400 Nebbiolo wines submitted by 230 different producers. To further intensify the program, journalists also participated in walk-around tastings, winery visits and winemaker dinners, exposing them by the end of the week to well over 500 Langhe and Roero wines. The wines presented in the 2014 blind tastings fell into the following categories: 2010 Barolo and 2008 Barolo Riserva, 2011 Barbaresco and 2009 Barbaresco Riserva, 2011 Roero and 2010 Roero Riserva.
