enhancements to its incentive legislation, and there is an expectation of increased production of film and television projects and commercials on the island. In anticipation of passage of this legislation, SAG staff members Carlina PUERTO RICO PRODUCTION-READY E Rodriguez, director, Spanish language organizing; David Fazekas, South Region executive; and Jackie Gadea, business representative, visited Puerto Rico in late February. “For the first time in decades, the film industry in Puerto Rico is closer than ever and moving forward together toward the creation of a self-sufficient industry with the support and help of the unions,” commented Rosi Acosta, local unit production manager. In conjunction with staff from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Locals 600 and 494, as well as resident professionals including attorneys, payroll representatives and producers, SAG participated in a daylong panel discussion to promote awareness of contractual terms for each union. During the visit, various meetings were held with local producers interested in producing under SAG contracts and an outreach effort was made to the Asociación de Agencias Publicitarias de Puerto Rico (Association of Advertising Agencies of Puerto Rico) to open the door for future commercial organizing opportunities. “It is clear that runaway Spanish language commercial production is not only a problem in the States but also in Puerto Rico. We want to work with the local production community to develop a strategy to compliment the incentives offered to commercial producers and advocate for the employment of our members on the island,” said Rodriguez. FLORIDA BRANCH TAKES ON EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN OVER 50 on movie and television screens? Or do 18-49-year-olds still hold an unbreakable allure for the advertising and entertainment industry? This is what RBD Women’s Committee I Chair and Florida Branch Vice President Ellen Wacher set out to explore. On March 3, she organized and moderated a panel discussion at the Florida Branch office, sponsored by SAG National Women’s Committee, titled Is 50-Plus the New 18-49? To kick off the initiative, Wacher assembled esteemed expert panelists Susan Davis, producer of the acclaimed documentary Invisible Women; Barbara Kahn, Wharton School of Business; and Glenn Garvin, television columnist for the Miami Herald. The aſternoon included a viewing of Invisible Women, which underscored both the limitations and potential solutions as statistics shiſt towards the buying power of the 50-plus generation — in particular the opportunity to accurately brand the image of older women as personally and financially empowered. SAG.org The panel discussion included feedback from some of Florida’s leading female performers and Elite Miami Model & Talent agent Allee Newhoff. Most importantly, the aſternoon extended beyond lively debate to engaging solutions, including a forum for women across the country to formulate plans for branding and marketing campaigns targeted at reintroducing the positive, proactive image of 50-plus women.
