LETTERS TO THE EDITOR THANK YOU, SAG MEMBERS I wanted to take a moment and thank you for the award I received [Oustanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries]. It wasn’t mentioned on your program, but I’d like you to know that I would have loved to have been there, however, I had a commitment to the play The Merchant of Venice, which I’ve been doing on Broadway that I needed to return to. Had the play not been going on, I would have been delighted to be there. I want you to know I am honored and appreciative of such recognition by my peers. Please know how grateful I am to have received this award and I will cherish it. Thanks again. Al Pacino New York Division SAG AWARDS ® PREVIEW Volume 51, Number 4 Screen Actors Guild Magazine FALL/WINTER 2010 TURNING NON-UNION UNION The article on ACHIEVEMENT HONOREE Ernest Borgnine LIFE Turning Non-Union Acting Jobs Into Union Work was very timely and important. Thank you for recogniz- ing the need for this important mission. We should all give a hearty thanks to long-time SAG member Sheldon Smith, who started a workshop on this issue for the Washington-Baltimore Branch’s Conserva- tory. He then used his own time and dime to continue to offer this program to members here and across the country. Who knew 15- plus years ago when he started, that it would spawn a national movement to organize? So I would like to applaud both this article and Sheldon. Thank you! Ellie K. Wang Washington-Baltimore Branch PAYING ONE’S FAIR SHARE There has been a great deal in the news about whether those in the highest income brackets should get tax cuts like others. We have a “graduated” income tax, where those in the higher brackets are taxed at a higher rate, and those earning little or no income pay little or nothing, but even if there were a “flat rate,” the wealthy would still end up paying more. With SAG dues, however, everyone pays the basic amount, plus a percentage of earn- ings, but it is a “reverse graduation,” where the rate drops for the highest earners. With all the discussion about paying one’s fair share, perhaps SAG should change its dues schedule. Aſter all, it is because of our contracts, and members sticking together, that our highest earners are able to earn so much. Larry Nazimek Chicago Branch Editor’s Note: In 2007, the SAG National Board approved adding dues for earnings above $500,000. In addition to base dues, dues are calculated as follows: earnings $1 – $200,000 x 1.85 percent; additional earnings between $200,001 – $500,000 x .5 percent; and then additional earnings between $500,001 – $1,000,000 x .25 percent.
