www.postmagazine.com Post • April 2014 29 of Mr. Morris Lessmore — an amazing experience. My home now is the wonderful Lucky Post, where I collaborate with incredible people and get to do what I love every day. Tony Baldridge Stereo VFX Supervisor legend3d Carlsbad, Ca www.legend3d.com Growing up, I always had an interest in film. My passion became more of an obsession in the '80s. For me, the '80s were a fun, sort of magical era, where the film greats started exploring the power of special effects. I was in awe of the visually- enhanced, artistic projects that the masters like Spielberg had their hand in. I quickly realized that filmmaking and VFX was something I wanted to seriously pursue. At the time, in the Phoenix area where I grew up, no local universities had an actual film program, let alone visual effects studies. So I did what most young, naive filmmakers and VFX people did in '94. I sold my car, bought a 16mm Arriflex BL, downloaded a bunch of trial software and started playing. American Cinematographer magazine and a somewhat usable thing called "the Internet" were my reference guides. With my film camera in-hand, and a desire to shoot horror films, I decided to get my hands dir ty and make a few shor ts. Trust me, it was nothing fancy. I managed to pull together a few grand and had fun creating creepy films filled with self-made effects that I had learned from sneaking into extra classes at the Ar t Institute or by teaching myself through trial and error. I posted the completed films online, on a site for indie filmmakers, and packed up to move to LA. My brother and I decided to move west, to the epicenter of the enter tainment industry, to continue our marketing/graphic design side business and see what trouble we could get into. Gearing up for LA, you could say I got a little sidetracked when I received an email from a Dr. Barry Sandrew, who was starting up a colorization studio in San Diego. Mirac- ulously, he had seen my small-time horror film and thought I had chutzpah. He appreci- ated the artistry of it and that I completed the visual effects by myself. During my ren- dezvous in San Diego, Barry invited me to check out his colorization business. Barry recognized my knack for bridging the techni- cal with the creative, and from that moment on, I started working for Legend3D. Legend3D expanded to develop a full 2D-to-3D conversion pipeline and has been involved in massive blockbuster hits. As one of three Legend3D visual effects supervisors, I've been given the artistic opportunity to continue growing, creating and working directly with some of the best filmmakers out there to help them realize their cinematic vision. Additionally, I've had the unique oppor- tunity to help advance today's 3D conversion technology and author VFX patents. From childhood dreams to a twisted hor- ror film to working with today's leading stu- dios and filmmakers, it's been a wild ride! My advice to film production and post produc- tion hopefuls: Remember to get your hands dir ty and be creative. Necessity is the mother of invention — if resources aren't readily available, find them or create them. Don't be afraid to dabble in different proj- ects — it's how you'll discover where your true talents lie and can lead you to where you least expect.
