bits & pieces Grass Valley optimizes Edius for new Intel Core S Creating The Goo Goo Dolls’ latest L OS ANGELES — Filmmaker/animator/VFX su- pervisor Cameron Clark (www.cameronclark- film.com) was tapped by Warner Music USA and London Alley Entertainment to serve as the ef- fects supervisor for The Goo Goo Dolls’ new music video, Not Broken. The video features dark silhouettes against soft colored backgrounds, with the action telling the story of a young couple’s relationship dur- ing war-time separation. Clark oversaw the shooting and designing of indi- vidual effects elements for the video, personally exe- cuting the compositing and animation of each ele- ment. After Effects was his primary tool for motion graphics and animation. The video was shot on a tight budget in front of a 16-foot cyc. Each element — people, props, explo- sions — was captured individually. The colored worlds, which evolve throughout the video’s different chapters, were designed and com- posited in After Effects. Mocha AE was used for 2D tracking. The tool allowed director Carlos Lopez Estrada (www. lopezestrada.com) and cinematogra- pher Aaron Platt (www.aaronplatt.com) to move the camera during the shoot as much as necessary, know- ing that Clark’s animated elements could ultimately be added without too much trouble in the end. Promoting Skins’ UK version The new release of Edius 6 will be fully optimized for use with the Intel processor. The pairing will allow for encoding of H.264 videos at faster-than-realtime speeds on a range of computers, from notebook PCs to desktop PCs. More than 500 laptop and desktop PC platform designs are expected from all major computer manufacturers based on this new processor family. The Edius 6 up- date will allow users to export to Blu-ray, or to the AVCHD format, at faster than re- altime directly from the Edius timeline. "With our second generation Core L ONDON — Director Neil Gorringe of Moxie Pictures (www.moxiepictures.com) created a new :60 trailer that promotes Season 5 of the popular UK teen dramatic series Skins. The project was produced by network/agency E4, London. Gorringe has directed a number of ‘racy’ trailers since the series premiered in 2007.This new promo features members of the cast — nude — falling through space in slow motion. It then switches gears as their fall hastens, clothing the characters mid-flight.The trailer is an example of how some shows are shifting to more abstract, artful promotion, rather than simply repurposing episode footage. According to Gorringe, the project was shot at high speed using the Phantom camera, which is capable of shooting HD at up to 1000fps. Cast members were shot against black in harnesses hang- ing from wires, jumping on trampolines and just lying down as air was blasted at them. Clothing was rigged with wires and yanked off people, then the footage was reversed in post. Everything was edited and composited in Avid at Final Cut in London.Wire removal and finessing was performed in Flame at The Mill. Envy Post in London handled the soundtrack. 6 Post • February 2011 www.postmagazine.com processors, video editors using Grass Valley's Edius 6 will be able to complete their work faster than ever," notes Fumihisa Shimono, director of software marketing at Intel.
