Ernest Borgnine also happily responds to “Mermaid Man,” “Marty,” and “Lt. Commander Quinton McHale,” among a host of other character names. Te famously gap-toothed, bushy- browed actor lives to connect with an audience: “To me, acting is not only a challenge, it keeps me going.” For more than 60 years, Borgnine has traded on his commanding presence and natural acting ability to build a rapport with viewers —creating characters you either love or “love to hate.” He’s an Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy award- winner who has appeared in more than 200 motion pictures and starred or guest-starred in dozens of television shows. His body of screen work alone has touched every generation within his lifetime, making him the worthy recipient of the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. “Ernie,” as he prefers to be called, was born Ermes Effron Borgnino on January 24, 1917, in Hamden, Conn., son of Italian immigrants Charles and Anna Borgnino and grandson of Count Paolo Boselli, financial advisor to Italian King Victor Emmanuel.
